"Would it not be romantic," Laura sighed, "if they were to fall in love again and get married?"

"And we could be bridesmaids," Lucy said, "that is, of course, if I am not married to Darlington by that time."

"What shall I do this afternoon?" Laura said. "Shall I try to meet someone new? Or would it be more comfortable to allow Varley to monopolize my time?"

"I wonder if he will ask this afternoon," Lucy said, the look in her eyes indicating that she was not thinking of Varley.

Felicity's mind too was preoccupied with the afternoon's engagement. There was nothing so extraordinary about the garden party except that it was being given by Laura's particular friends, the Townsends. But somehow Adrian's three-day visit had been a large breathing space in the hectic round of activities, and now it was almost like starting the Season all over again.
